Students from Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education had a wonderful experience
meeting other deaf students from France, Slovakia and Romania at the Junior
HIPEN (Hearing Impaired Professionals European Network) project meeting
hosted by the Cluj-Napoca High School for the Deaf in Romania from 14-21
June 2010.
Through formal workshops and informal activities they shared information
about their culture, their future job possibilities, and the rights of deaf
people in their countries.
They learnt about the education of deaf youths in other countries and tried
out each other’s sign language.
Students communicated through sports, dance and food events and made friends
with their European peers that they would never otherwise have met.
They concluded that they would like to set up a European association of
deaf youths with opportunities for future youth exchange visits.
